Rethinking Penicillin Allergy with Dr. Thomas Offerle

Written by Asthma NC | Sep 19, 2025 12:55:53 PM

Did you know that 9 out of 10 people who believe they’re allergic to penicillin are not? Many individuals carry a penicillin allergy label based on childhood reactions or outdated testing. This label can lead to the use of less effective, more expensive antibiotics—and even contribute to antibiotic resistance.

September 28 is National Penicillin Allergy Day, a time to raise awareness about one of the most misunderstood drug allergies in medicine. I’m Dr. Thomas Offerle, the newest physician to join Asthma & Allergy Specialists in Charlotte, NC, and one of my clinical interests is medication and drug allergies, including penicillin allergy.

Are You Really Allergic to Penicillin?

If you’ve been told you’re allergic to penicillin, you’re not alone. Around 10% of Americans carry a penicillin allergy label. However, research from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) shows that over 90% of these individuals are not truly allergic and can safely tolerate penicillin after proper evaluation.

This mislabeling often stems from:

  • Childhood reactions
  • Side effects mistaken for allergies
  • Outdated or incomplete testing

Unfortunately, carrying a penicillin allergy label can lead to:

  • Use of less effective, broad-spectrum antibiotics
  • Higher healthcare costs
  • Increased risk of antibiotic resistance
  • Longer hospital stays and poorer outcomes

Why Penicillin Allergy Testing Matters in Charlotte

At Asthma & Allergy Specialists, we offer penicillin allergy testing right here in Charlotte to help patients determine whether they are truly allergic. Depending on your history and risk level, this may involve skin testing or a direct oral challenge.

For many patients, testing can safely “delabel” the allergy, allowing access to first-line antibiotics and better care. According to the AAAAI, penicillin allergy testing is a cost-effective intervention that improves patient outcomes and supports antibiotic stewardship.

Benefits of Reconsidering Your Penicillin Allergy

  • Avoid unnecessary broad-spectrum antibiotics
  • Reduce healthcare costs
  • Improve treatment effectiveness
  • Help combat antimicrobial resistance
