In college, Dr. Johnston was drawn to immunology and considered a career as an immunologist. After spending time working in the lab, he realized that it would be much more exciting to treat people with immune disorders and allergies, especially since he grew up having both allergies and asthma. Dr. Johnston was attracted to Osteopathic medicine because its core principles focus on the body’s ability to function as a whole and heal itself, a key role of the immune system.

Aside from allergies and asthma, Dr. Johnston has an interest in hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare genetic swelling disorder. He has published several articles on this topic and has had the opportunity to educate physicians on HAE both in the US and internationally. Dr. Johnston has been a principal investigator for several clinical trials evaluation new treatment options to help prevent swelling attacks in HAE.

He is very passionate about food allergy which stems from having a child with peanut allergy. He was very excited to participate as a principal investigator on the Palisade Trial, a clinical trial designed to desensitize patients who are allergic to peanut, helping them to tolerate peanut. In addition, Dr. Johnston has had to opportunity to treat a large number of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), has published several abstracts, and is actively involved in EoE clinical research. He had the pleasure of speaking at the 2011 APFED national patient conference.
